HEADER - DO NOT TOUCH

It's officially fall!

We spent some time outdoors this past week before the rain began. We took some time to go out on a nature scavenger hunt. We were looking for particular objects in order to help with our descriptive writing. Upon our return, we had a great discussion about what we saw, heard, smelled and could feel. We began to write descriptive show sentences. We will continue to focus on growing our sentences and turning them into show sentences.

In math this week, we continued to learn about place value. We have moved past the 1000's and are entering larger numbers this week. We took some time to discuss what a base 10 block would look like if they made one for 10 000. Students had a great time building a potential base 10  ten thousand block. Students are beginning to see that our place value system is based on a pattern of 10. There was a lot of cutting and constructing happening this past week. We will continue to look at large numbers this week. I suggest extra practice in the extra practice section of my blog.

We have also launched our Biodiversity unit. It ties in really nicely with our descriptive writing for outdoors.  We have watched a few clips of what biodiversity is all about.  We have a busy week ahead of us. This week is Truth and Reconciliation Week across Canada. We will be talking time to recognize and talk about the culture of Indigenous Canadians and the impact of Residential Schools. September 30 will also mark orange shirt day. I invite all students who own an orange shirt to wear it on Thursday to bring awareness to Residential Schools. On Friday we will have our annual Terry Fox Run. Follow us on twitter to see all the excitement.

Oh! I almost forgot- this Wednesday, the grade 6 class will be collaborating with grade 11 and 12 students from St. FX virtually in order to come up with a t-shirt design for the end of the year. Stay tuned to more info on this.

Have a great week!
