Math Program

We will be following the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum and focusing on a new Math program purchased by the Ottawa Catholic School Board to help facilitate continued growth and improvement in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. This program is called MathUP.

Created by Marian Small, MathUP Classroom is a comprehensive, online, K–8 instructional solution that helps teachers better help their students. MathUP is designed to:

• Teach through essential understandings

• Teach and assess with intention and purpose

• Focus on effective ways to consolidate learning

• Increase student engagement through critical and creative thinking

• Meeting the needs of all learners

Hapara Workspace (accessible at home)

You can access your child's workspace material by clicking the Hapara icon in the OCSB Student Portal. In Math, students have access to a Math Up workspace designed to help support their learning in class. An image of a unit of study as it appears in the workspace is shown below. The Learning Goals for each unit are described on the left with links to math games that support your childs learning in that unit available below. The next series of cards contain PDF's of parent guides, entitled SUM IT UP, which summarize the key ideas that your child is learning in Math and can help you support your child's work. Underneath that, there are links to PDF's of Mathletics workbooks that support the concept being studied that you can print off for extra home practice if you feel it is needed. On the right hand side, there are PDF's of manipulatives and resources provided by Math UP should you wish to have your child play some of the games provided. The workspace is organized sequentially according to the units of study as we have studied them in class. Please keep in mind that although this workspace is organized in units, we also spiral in our Math class. Spiralling is organizing topics that might traditionally be taught in blocks, chapters, or units of study over a short period of time and introducing topics in smaller chunks and spreading them out over a longer period of time. It is common in our class to come back to a topic multiple times over the duration of the grade in order to go deeper into our learning each time and help ensure comprehension of key concepts.

Mathletics (accessible at home)

Mathletics is a captivating online math learning space providing students with all the tools they need to be successful learners, both in the classroom and beyond. Powerful courses aligned to provincial math curricula, matched with dynamic tools and reporting for teachers. Mathletics supports a blend of student-driven learning and teacher-led instruction. In the Learn area, students have access to a full set of activities, aligned to the provincial math curricula, plus active tutorials and print-based materials. Games and apps in the Play area engage students while they target math fluency, including the famous Live Mathletics. Teachers can use the Review area to assign tasks to help assess student performance, diagnose areas of improvement and set targeted curriculum activities to address learning gaps, all from within Mathletics. I'm excited to use this newly updated powerful resource this year. This will also be another excellent resource for families wanting to support their child's learning at home with extra practice.

Students can access their Mathletics accounts through the Student Portal.

Students will be given usernames and passwords at the beginning of the year. Students are encouraged to keep their usernames and passwords in a safe place that they can access (ex. a dedicated page in their student agenda). If your child is unsure of their username or password, they may ask me and I can provide it to them again.

EQAO Practice

Students will be sent google forms throughout the school year that contain EQAO multiple choice questions.  You can visit the EQAO website to access released versions of prior assessments if you would like your child to engage in EQAO practice at home: https://www.eqao.com
